Social Watch: Report Indicates that Poverty in Africa May Grow
According to Social Watchs' Annual Report 2008, 80 countries fare badly when examining 3 criteria, measured in the "basic capabilities index": child mortality, number of children completing primary education, and proportion of births attended by skilled personel. Especially in sub-Saharan African countries with recorded strong economic growth in recent years, the economic growth has not been translated into a major drop in poverty levels.

Social Watch – an international network that monitors poverty eradication and gender equality – emphasised Human Rights as key to eradicating poverty in their most recent report launched yesterday at the European Parliament, in the presence of Luisa Morgantini, Vice-President of the European Parliament.
