Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the first diagnosed AIDS case in North America, the UN General Assembly assessed progress against the pandemic since the 2001 Special Session on HIV/AIDS in a three-day session May 31-June 1, and issued a political declaration. Negotiations were complex and long-drawn, concluding only on the eve of the final day with the arrival of ministers.

India's war on poverty: Easy victory unlikely
NEW DELHI - The fanfare surrounding the start of the latest poverty reduction program in India was exultant. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India described the initiative as "historic," the president of the governing Congress party, Sonia Gandhi, said it was "revolutionary," and the minister responsible for it declared that this was the "perfect" system for reducing hunger.

Corporate health sector may be booming but 96 per cent of the Community Health Centres (CHCs) in the state do not have an operation theatre and over 50 per cent of the CHCs do not even have a separate delivery room for pregnant women to deliver children in privacy.

Launching of the Social Watch Report in Ghana
Accra, Sept. 16, GNA - The Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS), the country's economic framework, has been less successful in alleviating poverty since its introduction some three years ago. There has also been insufficient attention paid to the situation of women in politics and their role in economic activity, the Ghana Social Watch Coalition said in a report launched in Accra on Friday. The report is contained in this year's 2005 Global Social Watch Report on the theme, "Roars and Whispers, Gender and Poverty, Promises versus Actions".

Millennium Goals: Poverty is not a statistic
MONTEVIDEO, Sep 14 (IPS) - Fighting poverty requires, among other things, tools for measuring the phenomenon in all its complexity. Poverty cannot be defined by having an income of one or two dollars a day, nor is there any advantage in distinguishing the very poor from the "almost" very poor, says the annual report by Social Watch, a global coalition of around 400 citizens' groups and non-governmental organisations from more than 50 countries.
